Do something different.

The lovely truth: Okay, this may sound totally crazy, but I've never had my makeup professionally done. Even though a million opportunities have presented themselves to me over the years I've never taken them, not one. Even for my own wedding day, I chose to do my own makeup. Crazy, right?! It's not that I feel that my makeup skills are far more superior than someone else's. It's just that I am a true perfectionist. Maybe it's the Virgo in me? Because I know this about myself, I have always steered clear of someone else doing it, until now!

A few weeks ago I got a email from one of my long-time friends at ULTA saying that I had to come in for a major event they were hosting with Smashbox Cosmetics in Scottsdale. The Smashbox makeup artists, along with celebrity photographer Steven Khan, were hosting a Smashbox Photo Event. Smashbox has been hosting these events in major cities at ULTA, Sephora, and Macy's. Click here to see up-coming events.

Basically, if you book an appointment with one of their makeup artists and purchase over $75 in Smashbox products, you are able to have your head shots taken by Steven Khan. I know some of you may be thinking, "Who the heck is Steven Khan?" He is the celebrity photographer at Smashbox Stuidos in LA. He has snapped some really famous faces: Cindy Crawford and Beyonce to name a few. I was really excited to meet him, but kept thinking how it would go letting someone else do my makeup (especially for my photoshoot with Steven!).

It's weird. As I've grown older, the more fearless I've become about trying new things that I may not have been so comfortable with before. I understand that perfection can sometimes get in the way of creativity. Dean and Dylan have really taught me that beautiful lesson. How silly of me to let my own perfectionist attitude stand in the way all these years! So, like a little trooper, I marched into ULTA and met one of the best makeup artists from Smashbox!

After I was done with makeup I was ready from my close up with Steven! Let me tell you, it was one of the most amazing things to see how he works. He is so fast and intense. Just the kind of thing you'd expect from a celebrity photgrapher. It's almost like he could anticipate my facial moves and expressions before I did them. After he took my pictures, it was a pleasure chatting with him! Now Cindy and I have one thing in common! Thank you, Steven!
