Bold is beautiful.

Beautiful: Bold is beautiful. There are certain times during the year that calls for bold makeup! The Holidays are the perfect time to try something daring that adds allure to your look. Last week, I got an instant message from Sarah in Las Vegas saying, "Hi Lauren, I want to try something new for a Christmas party, I'm only brave enough to try a new lip color, any suggestions?". I think about her question for a quick second then reply, "Oxblood!".  I can tell by the lapse in response time that she thought one of two things: 1.) What is Oxblood? or 2.) She didn't think that Oxblood would work for her. Turns out, Sarah was familiar with the Oxblood trend but didn't think she could really pull it off. After a few more messages back and forth, I assure her she can pull it off...beautifully!

Gorgeous: The word Oxblood doesn't sound gorgeous, does it? When I worked for L'Oreal, I learned about Oxblood while I was waiting for my return flight home from NYC. Earlier that day, I made the mistake of wearing these amazing boots (with a 4" stacked heel) while walking all around the city (forgot my extra pair of flats, of course!). I arrived at the airport after a long work day and my feet were killing me - not to mention my amazing boots were completely skuffed up. As I sat there, close to my terminal, waiting to board my delayed flight out of JFK, I noticed that a ton of business men were getting their shoes shined at A Shine & Co. stand. For whatever reason, I decided it would be a good idea to try to salvage my boots and potentially have an excuse to take-off my shoes so my numb toes could regain feeling again.

The gentleman that shined my shoes, quickly chatted me up. He spoke about the leather grain of my shoes, talked about what makes a good leather sole, and he taught me about the benefits of shoe polish. He told me that he loved Oxblood colored shoes because of the nostalgia and popularity from the 1920's. Not knowing what he meant, and very intrigued by our conversation, he proceeded to showed me what Oxblood colored shoe polish looked like. After seeing the shoe polish tin, it all made sense, I was familiar with the color but didn't realize that Oxblood was the proper name. I instantly had a flash back to the '90's and remembered those chocolate-berry colored Dr. Martens boots that I always loved on other people but never felt were quite my style.  I learned something new! On the flight back from NY, all I kept thinking about was how gorgeous Oxblood was and how happy I was that my boots were saved!

Makeup: Here are some different ways to incorporate the Oxblood trend into your makeup look this Holiday season! Expert tip: just remember to keep all other makeup simple and fresh to not compete with the Oxblood color. Less is always more!

1. Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Mulberry...$20. Details: This lip stain goes on very smooth and is long-lasting. It's comfortable to wear and not drying. Great to keep in your handbag!

2. Nars Nail Polish in Jungle Red...$18. Details: Long-lasting and super glossy! It has a chip-resistant finish with UV protection to prevent discoloration. Pretty tough!

3. Bobbi Brown Lip Color in Blackberry...$24. Details: Enriched with vitamins E and C this is a super creamy lipstick that is true to color. Oxblood perfection!

4. Hourglass Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss in Icon...$28. Details: Love this gloss! It is very high-shine and the color is rich in pigment. Does not contain any parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances or dyes or phthalates. Beautiful deep ruby red!

5. Make Up For Ever Powder Blush #131...$20. Details: High pigment, long lasting, silky sheen powder blush in a dark red / deep burgundy color. So gorgeous!

Expert tip: If you find that the Oxblood lip color is a tad too dark for you, try to layer the Oxblood color lipstick over a true red colored lipstick or stain. This will help to brighten and add some depth and dimension that looks stunning!

Do something lovely: Next time you are waiting on your delayed flight at an airport, get your lovely leather shoes shined! It's a really neat experience that men have been doing for ages! It's really interesting to learn about this lost art form and to be reminiscent of a bygone era!

Special thanks to Sarah for inspiring this blog post. It was nice to be reminded of my conversation with the gentleman from A Shine & Co. who saved my Chloe boots from destruction and taught me about Oxblood. Sarah has promised me (I made her swear on my Kevyn Aucoin Making Faces book) that she will be bold and try wearing Oxblood colored lips to her Holiday party!

Wishes are beautiful.

Beautiful: Wishes are beautiful. Especially during this time of year. Doesn't it seem like that child-like quality of wishing and hoping revisits us during the Holidays? I can remember that excitement and wonder as Christmas Day approached, the anticipation of getting that gift you'd hoped for seemed like it meant everything. Now, I find myself wishing and hoping but for different things. Like the opportunity to spend as much time as possible with those I love. Knowing how quickly time passes, I wish for more moments than anything else.

Gorgeous: It's usually around 4:00 a.m. when I wake up on Black Friday to meet my mom and my sisters for our standing date. We begin our day at Starbucks to fuel up on coffee before we review our strategy. For the record (not going to name any names), there is one sister who always arrives looking gorgeous (fresh-faced with full makeup on), one sister that doesn't really like shopping but is the voice of reason when we all start buying DVDs for $5 (who doesn't need an extra copy of the movie 300?), one sister who is pure comic relief for tense situations (like when Target runs out of Disney Princess dolls), and one sister that is a wild card (who needs a SodaStream?). As the years go by, we keep our Black Friday tradition of coffee, laughing, shopping, laughing, breakfast, laughing. Mainly because it has gotten harder to see each other as often. Some of us live away, some of us have little ones, some of us have high-demand jobs, and sometimes things just come up. But, for one early morning a year, it's just us, wishing that we had more time.

Makeup: I wanted to share with you some Holiday makeup collections on my Black Friday Wishlist this year!

1. Stila Snow Angel Color Palette...$39. Details: I love this palette because it looks like a snowflake! It has 12 cheek colors, 18 eye shadows, and comes with a Stay All Day Waterproof Volumizing Mascara. Cute! (image nordstrom.com)

2. Bobbi Brown Caviar and Oyster Palette...$75. Details: This collection has 8 eye shadows and a luminescent skin enhancer that can be worn on eyes and cheeks. So pretty! (image saks.com)

3. Tom Ford Beauty Lipstick Lip Service...$192.00. Details: This was on Oprah's Favorite Things 2012 http://www.oprah.com/gift-list/Oprahs-Favorite-Things-2012. This gift set comes with 4 lipstick that go on so smooth! Colors include: Spanish Pink, Crimson Noir, Nude Vanille, and Wild Ginger. So luxurious! (image neimanmarcus.com)

4. Sephora + Pantone Universe Precious Metal Shadow Palette...$48.00. Details: This is a must have this Holiday season! This eye shadow palette comes with 35 gorgeous shimmery metallic shades. You can apply wet for a more dramatic look! (image sephora.com)

5. Tarte For The Love of Lipgloss...$32. Details: The Maracuja lipgloss set has 15 glosses and is really 3 gifts in one! These luscious glosses are rich in Vitamin E and Maracuja Oil which helps to replenish and rebuild skin, leaving lips hydrated and soft. Perfect gift! (image ulta.com)

Do something lovely: Start a lovely tradition (if you don't have one already)! I promise it will be well worth it (even if it starts at 4:00 a.m.)! It's always so fun to share a daft experience with people who's company you enjoy. Don't forget to buy yourself something lovely as you shop for everyone else on your list (Sephora has some really great Black Friday steals, see below)!

Special thanks to my darling Brian who helps me do all the reconnassiance before my Black Friday mission. Thank you for braving the madness just to get me a physical copy of the coveted Black Friday newspaper (it just isn't the same looking at the ads online). You are my hero and I love you dearly! ps. - I'm really wishing and hoping that Santa brings me the Tom Ford Beauty Lipstick Lip Service collection!

Memories are lovely.

Beautiful: Memories are beautiful. I will always remember the day a book changed my life. It was Christmas Day and my sister Toni handed me my present. "Open it!", she said. "What is it?", I asked. "Just open it...you're going to looove it!", she exclaimed. She was right, I did love it! What my little darling of a sister gave me is now considered one of the best makeup books of all time! It was Making Faces by Kevin Aucoin. To this day, I still have my original copy and I revisit it from time to time. Each time I open it, it takes me back to that Christmas memory of pouring over the pages not knowing at the time I would never see makeup the same again!

Gorgeous: Kevyn Aucoin had a simple philosophy about makeup. He believed women should always feel gorgeous and beautiful regardless of size, age or color. He felt that women should reveal their natural beauty without covering it up with layers of product. Aside from being one of the most sought-after celebrity makeup artist of the 90's, he is credited with changing the women wear foundation today. The New Nakeds by Ultima II (owned by Revlon at the time and no longer available) was a groundbreaking foundation line Kevyn helped create with shades available for all skintones. Before then, no other brand had ever created various foundation ranges to meet the needs of all women.

Makeup: Get inspired! Here are my favorite makeup and beauty books I think you'll enjoy!

1. Bobbi Brown Pretty Powerful...List price $29.95. Details: This book was just released in Septemeber 2012 and it is already one of my favorites! I love this book because it is filled with inspiring stories and makeup tips from real women. This is not a step-by-step makeup book but more of a book of empowerment all while using makeup!

2. Kevyn Aucoin Making Faces...List price $21.99. Details: This is my all-time favorite makeup book! It's amazing to see how Kevyn takes real people and celebrities and uses the art of makeup to create different looks (the Vamp, the Diva, the Siren). In my opinion, this book is geared toward a reader that is comfortable with makeup and wants to step further into the creative artistry side. There is a great reference page on how to shade and highlight the face. True genius!

3. Scott Barnes Face to Face...List price $24.99. Details: Scott Barnes is a celebrity makeup artist who's clients include Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. The love from his clients is deeply felt throughout the book which speaks volumes about his talent. In my opionion, this book is well put together and offers some great tips from one of the best in the beauty industry!

4. Francois Nars Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself...List price $45.00. Details: I love this book because it shows real women (teachers, artists, students, etc.) of all different colors! This book has a lot of great specific tips and techniques. You'll love the before and after pictures with the clear sheet that goes over to detail product placement. Worth every dollar!

5. Jemma Kidd Make-up Secrets: Solutions to Every Woman's Beauty Issues and Make-Up Dilemmas...List price $24.99. Details: You may have seen Jemma Kidd's makeup line sold at Target. Before she was a makeup artist she was a fashion model. She has just released her second makeup book. Hot off the press, it was released on November 13, 2012. I love that she talks about new wonder products on the market and addresses beauty concerns like skincare and aging. You'll also love that she shows how to achieve iconic looks from Audrey Hepburn to Kate Moss!

Do something lovely: You never know when a gift could change someone's life. This Holiday season wouldn't it be lovely to give a thoughtful gift to inspire, to encourage, and to motivate someone to do what they love? Trust me, it could be a gift they remember forever!

Special thanks to my sister Toni for giving me one of the best Christmas presents ever! How did you know? Maybe it was the hundreds of CoverGirl LipSlicks that I had thrown all over our bathroom counter (my favorite was the one in the yellow tube called Bronze Goddess) or maybe it was the pink Caboodle filled to the max with makeup?  Thank you for noticing and encouraging me do what I love!

Unique is gorgeous.

Beautiful: Over the years, I have met so many people. Each person I meet has a unique story. They each have something special that defines who they are. I believe that makeup should be used as a medium to celebrate what defines you. In my opinion, makeup should help to tell a visual story. Maybe it's your wedding day, and you are so excited and in love. I would translate those feelings with makeup by giving you a beautiful look that was fresh-faced, with bright eyes, and glowing skin to reflect that. Maybe you are in Las Vegas to have an girls weekend and are ready to have some fun! I would focus on a makeup look that is bold, gorgeous, and sexy. I would try cat eyeliner, tons of lashes, and red lips. Whatever you are feeling, let makeup tell your unique story! I know it's beautiful!

Gorgeous: It was in 2006 that I learned the true meaning of unique beauty. I was in Las Vegas (wearing cat eyeliner, tons of lashes, and red lips) on a girls weekend trip. We thought it would be fun to do something retro-inspired for our trip. You know, classic Vegas. So, we decided to go see Liza Minnelli in concert at the Luxor Hotel.  We had no idea what to expect. Then, the lights dimmed, and there she was, at 60-years-old, standing on-stage wearing an all black sequin dress, donning short black pixie hair, with tons of lashes, and bold red lips. Liza was absolutely gorgeous! The band started playing and she was transformed. The dancing, the singing, the story telling, the iconic makeup, we were in awe! During that trip I realized that our unique beauty is what defines us. Liza was a living example. She is a born performer and her makeup reflects that, it's bold, dramatic, and fun. That night in Vegas, she really sparkled!

Makeup: In honor of the icon, Liza Minnelli, I thought it would be appropriate to share Top 5 Eyeconic Mascaras. Be bold, like Liza!

1. Bare Escentuals Buxom Mascara...$18 (image sephora.com). Details: Intense volume, does not clump or smudge. Love that it contains no parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, or phthalates.

2. Chanel Inimitable Mascara...$30 (image neimanmarcus.com). Detials: Does it all! Volume, length, curl, seperation. Available in 2 shades Noir (black) and Brun (brown). Contains a special Pro Vitamin B5 complex that hydrates and conditions lashes.

3. Benefit They're Real Mascara...$23.00 (image ulta.com). Details: Lengthens, curls, lifts, seperates. Interesting mascara wand specially designed with a domed tip to get even the tiniest lashes.

4. Dior Show Black Out Mascara...$25 (image sephora.com). Details: Intense kohl-black color that promises high volume and long lashes. An addition to the original cult favorite Dior Show.

5. Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara...$29.50 (image macys.com). Details: High definiton, amplifying mascara, that contains plant extracts that regenerates lashes in 4 weeks to help decreases lash fallout and strenghten lashes.

Best eye makeup remover: philosophy just release me dual phase oil-free eye makeup remover...$18 (image philosophy.com), Details: Natural aloe, chamomile, cucumber extracts, soothing essentials cool and calm the skin. Easily removes waterproof mascara! Works like a dream!

Do something lovely: Take some time for your lovely unique self and discover Liza Minnelli (if you haven't already). I promise you will not be disappointed. I would recommend watching either Cabaret or Liza with a Z. If you ever have the opportunity to see her live in concert, I would. You may be the youngest one there but it will be so much fun! She is dramatic, over the top, and uniquely beautiful. A good reminder every now and then to be bold. She loves what she does and it shows!

Special thanks to my Female Rat Pack that accompanied me to Las Vegas all those years ago. Thank you for going along with my crazy retro-Vegas idea and eating at the oldest steakhouse in Vegas (Golden Steer) and renting a Cadillac just to drive it down Las Vegas Blvd. (1.2 miles from our hotel to Luxor). I learned what defines real beauty on this trip. It is one of my most treasured memories. Thank you, dolls!

Smart is beautiful.

Beautiful: Being smart is beautiful. As I waited in the long, never ending line on Tuesday to cast my vote for President, I couldn't help but notice how many women were at the polling station. Women of all sizes, colors and ages prepared to let their voices be heard by exercising their civil liberty. At that moment, I was proud to be a woman and an American. I couldn't even imagine not having the right to vote. I am grateful that we live in a country where wearing makeup isn't against the law. I feel fortunate that I was able to go to college and start a small business. To all the women that came before, I am forever indebted to you.

Gorgeous: I remember the day I learned about the Three Branches of Government in my Social Studies class. I distinctly remember feeling very overwhelmed and stressed. When I got home from school I told my sister Toni (who is two years younger than me) about my day. She quickly grabbed a pencil and a notebook and started to explain everything in a way I understood. How did she know this? She was just a kid. Toni is gorgeous and smart. She always has been. On the day she called to tell me that she was offered a position to work at The White House, I cried. I cried because I was so proud to see a smart, gorgeous woman so eager to make change! Toni for President in 2020!

Makeup: In honor of celebrating smart women, I put together a few of clever beauty buys. These are products for under $15. Pretty genius!

1. Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate #14...$4.92 at drugstore.com. Details: This is a super creamy lipstick in a perfect nude color. I would also try #11. It's a great red lipstick to add to your collection. At this price grab two!

2. Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm in Quenched...$3.99 at ULTA. Details: This ultra moisturizing SPF 20 lip balm comes in 6 different flavors. Two out of the six do not have a color tint (Quenched and Peppermint). The others are Peach Kiss, Grape Vine, Cherry Me & Pink Punch. Love these!

3. Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer...$12.99 at Target. Details: For the cost, this primer does the trick. Helps minimize pores, helps foundation stay on longer, goes on smooth.

4. Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Pink Plum...$7.99 at ULTA. Details: Lightweight like a powder but melts into the skin like a cream. Comes in 10 shades. It really has a bouncy feeling! You'll have to try it to see what I mean. Very cool!

5. Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black...$9.99 at ULTA. Details: For a drug store gel liner this is my favorite. I like the fact that it's smudgeproof and waterproof. It also comes with a eyeliner brush for application precision. Don't forget to buy it in Brown for times when you want a less dramatic look!

6. L'Oreal Studio Secrets MagicLumi Concealer...$12.99 at Target. Details: This magic wand instantly enhances and conceals with a subtle glow. Has a semi-powdery finish. You can also use it as a highlighter!

7. L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Blackest Black...$7.49 at ULTA. Details: One of my all time favorite mascaras. Get bold, dramatic lashes that's suitable for sensitive eyes. Also, try it in Carbon Black for intense lash color!

Do something lovely: Mark your lovely calendars for another American rite of passage that is coming up on February 3, 2013...the Super Bowl. I just read that the lovely Beyonce will be performing during the half-time show. Wouldn't it be fun to host a Super Bowl party for just us gals called Martinis with Tebow? After all, Who Run the World? Girls! http://vimeo.com/24048828

Special thanks to my sister Toni for teaching me about the Three Branches of Government. If I would have never passed that quiz, it may have altered my destiny. Then, who would have recommended a power red lipstick (Nars Shanghai Express) on your first day of work at The White House? You got my vote!

Thank you!

Friends are lovely.

Beautiful: Friends are beautiful. This past week I received an email from Michelle in Denver and here is what she wrote, "Dear Lauren, what the heck is BB Cream, do I need it, and will it make me beautiful?". When I read her email, I laughed. Simply because I loved the tone. I felt like I was reading an email from one of my sisters or close friends. For some reason makeup brings out the "girlfriend" in all of us. Trust me, if you ever get a group of women together to have their makeup done, you'll see what I mean! It's guaranteed there will be plenty of laughs, tons of smiles, and a lot of shared experiences!

Gorgeous: "BB Cream will only enhance what makes you gorgeous and beautiful!", I write back to Michelle in a response email. "I promise to arm you with as much information as I can so you can decide if BB Cream is best for you!", I say. "Thank you lovely!", she writes.

Makeup: BB Cream - What the heck is it?

The story: First question. What does BB stand for? BB stands for Blemish Balm or Beauty Balm. BB Cream has been all the rage recently in the makeup world. Originally developed by a German dermatologist for post-surgery patients, it is part skincare, part foundation. Some have referred to it as tinted moisturizer on steroids. I actually review BB Cream in my Makeup For Mommies and Teenage Dream education classes becasue it is a multi-tasking product for multi-tasking women and it's super easy to use. Think of it as a moisturizer, sunblock, primer, and foundation all in one. Very popular in Asia, it's just now making it's debut in the U.S. and may of the big brands have introduced their own version BB Cream.

Pros: Super easy to apply, lightweight, covers blemishes (kind of like a concealer), soothes skin (mineral-based), multi-tasking (mositurizer, primer & foundation), UV protection, anti-aging ingredients (hyaluronic acid & vitamin c)

Cons: Limited shades (many brands only have 1 - 5 shades) and it may be hard to achieve full coverage

Expert advice: Always do what works best for you! However, any beauty expert will tell you that there is no one product that can do it all. In the beauty industry, we often use the example of 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner to explain this point. Think about it. You never get the full benefits of the shampoo or the conditioner. Instead, you get that weird feeling of half-clean / half-soft hair, right? That's kind of my experience with BB Cream. I felt like I wasn't getting the full benefits of a moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, or foundation. If you know that going in, and you are okay with it, I think you will love it for all that it is (or isn't)!

Here are my Top 5 BB Cream picks (see above):

1. Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream SPF 15...$11.99 at Target. Details: Renews, brightens, evens, hydrates, protects, dermatologist tested

2. Stila Stay All Day HD Beauty Balm...$38. Details: Leaves a silky, powdery finish, helps reduce pore size and provides oil control, paraben-free, HD formula, no SPF

3. Clinique Age Defense BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30...$37. Details: SPF protection, antioxidants for prevention, coverage to banish imperfections, available in 3 shades, use sparingly

4. Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm SPF 20...$32. Details: Anti-aging multi-mineral complex, vegan friendly, available in 4 shades, light-diffusing pigments add radiance

5. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Broad Specturum SPF 35...$39. Details: Cruelty-free, available in 5 shades, guaranteed to improve skin moisture in 4 weeks, great primer when used with foundation for more coverage

Do something lovely: Before the craziness of the holidays is in full swing, grab your sisters, friends, or both, and have some lovely girl time! I promise there will be endless laughs and countless memories. I'll bring the champagne and makeup!

Special thanks to Michelle for agreeing to share her email with the world. It's official...we are "girlfriends". You'll have to let me know which BB Cream you decided on! Xo, Lauren

People are beautiful.

Beautiful: When Inslee Haynes said she wanted to feature me on her blog called The Sketch Book, I was thrilled! Please read the post at  http://www.inslee.net/blog/index.php/2012/10/29/lauren-sandy/. She is the creative beauty responsible for my illustration (see above). Please visit her site and be sure to order some stylish sketched stationary, prints or calendars. Her work speaks for itself, I adore it and so will you!

Gorgeous: True talent is gorgeous. Inslee is as talented as she is gorgeous. She is a Washington D.C. darling turned NYC resident. I was her last blog post before she lost power in her East Village apartment and her SoHo studio. As Hurricane Sandy made land fall and wreaked havoc on NYC and the East Coast, I watched CNN and saw so many ordinary people do extraordinary things to help. Seeing all this reminded me of one of my favorite Audrey Hepburn quotes, "the best thing to hold on to in life is each other". So true - especially at a time like this.

Makeup: Pretty in the City. Makeup inspired by the city that never sleeps. Here are some finds.

1. Nars Blush in New York $24 (image narscosmetics.com)

2. Urban Decay Limited Edition New York City Palette $39 (image urbandecay.com)

3. MAC Lipstick in New York Apple $15 (image maccosmetics.com)

4. Stila Park Avenue Shimmer and Matte Eye Collection $32 (image sephora.com)

5. Sephora Cream Eyeliner in Made In Manhattan $12 (image sephora.com)

Do Something Lovely: Do something to help. Anything. You can donate money, food, or blood for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Please visit  http://www.redcross.org/hurricane-sandy?scode=RSG00000E017&subcode=grantdonations&gclid=CMHMr5SjrbMCFRSSPAod6HEA8w.

Special thanks to Inslee Haynes for helping me turn my dreams into a reality and creating my illustration! I love it! You are in my thoughts as your beloved city works to recover from Sandy. Looking forward to The Sketch Book soon!
